"When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for them."
โ Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ ยท Sahih MuslimA grassroots movement built on the belief that books build bridges.
Most people have never had a real conversation with a Muslim neighbor, let alone held a Quran. Books have always been one of the quietest, most powerful ways to close that distance.
Crescent Shelf started as one family's small answer to that gap โ a belief that a book left on a shelf can do what a billboard or a news segment never could: invite genuine curiosity, without pressure, on the reader's own terms.
The idea is simple. Muslim families open their doors through a small shelf in their front yard, their masjid entrance, or their place of business. Neighbors walk by, reach for something that catches their eye, and leave with a little more understanding than they had before. No agenda. No conversation required. Just a good book and an open shelf.
We're still new and we're honest about that. Crescent Shelf is a grassroots aspiration as much as it is a network. Every shelf is independently hosted by a family or institution that believes good books make better neighbors.
We hope you'll join us โ
"Convey from me, even if it is one verse."
โ Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ ยท Sahih BukhariMany neighbors have never held a Quran or read about Islam from a Muslim perspective. A shelf on your front yard is a gentle, non-confrontational invitation.
A neighbor picks up a book out of curiosity and leaves with a little more understanding.
Crescent Shelf shelves become neighborhood landmarks where Muslims and non-Muslims alike discover shared humanity through books and conversation.
No salesperson. No pamphlet forced into someone's hands. A shelf lets neighbors engage entirely on their own terms: pick something up, put it back, return another day. That low-pressure openness is often what makes the difference.
Your shelf keeps giving long after you've set it up. Each book read is a ripple in your community, a small act with an outsized effect.
Our shelves offer a thoughtfully curated selection โ from Islamic essentials to books that broaden perspectives on the world.

Choose your box. You have three good options: buy a ready-made library box, find one secondhand, or build your own. A weatherproof wooden box roughly 18"ร12"ร10" works well. Most families spend somewhere in the $40โ$120 range. Amazon · Walmart
Get your post (if freestanding). A 4ร4 pressure-treated post is the standard choice. It holds up outdoors and is easy to set in concrete. A 6 ft post works for most setups, leaving about 3 ft above ground once buried. 6 ft post (~$12) · 8 ft post (~$16)
Build or assemble. If you would like to build your own, there are many free plans and video tutorials online that walk through cuts, assembly, and post installation. No advanced woodworking needed. YouTube tutorials · LittleFreeLibrary.org plans
Install your post. Dig a hole 18 to 24 inches deep, set your post in fast-setting concrete, and let it cure for 24 hours before mounting the box.
Stock the shelf and add your notes. Add books and include a small note describing how your shelf works, whether books are free to keep, read and return, or both. Stock as many books as you like and refresh whenever you are ready.
Activate your library. Once your shelf is ready, email us at crescentshelforg@gmail.com with a photo and the name you would like for your branch. We will add you to the Crescent Shelf network map.

Everything you need to know about Crescent Shelf โ from setting up to keeping your community safe.
Crescent Shelf is a grassroots network of community-hosted Islamic libraries. Similar to the Little Free Library movement, we empower Muslim families, masjids, and organizations to place small outdoor libraries in their communities stocked with free Qurans, Islamic literature, and carefully selected books on contemporary topics from the Muslim perspective.
Any Muslim individual, family, masjid, Islamic school, halal business, or community center can host a shelf. You just need a willing heart and a suitable outdoor space.
Absolutely not. Our shelves are open to neighbors of all backgrounds and faiths. In fact, one of our core goals is to make Islamic knowledge accessible to curious non-Muslim neighbors. Anyone is welcome to take a free Quran, borrow a book, or simply stop and browse.
That's entirely up to you as the host. Tthere's no single required model. Some hosts run their shelf like a little free library where everything is free to take and keep. Others prefer a borrow-and-return system for certain books so more neighbors can benefit from the same copy. Many do a mix of both.
Simple labeling makes the system clear to visitors: colored stickers, a small laminated sign, or a handwritten note on the door all work well.
Starting costs vary widely:
With a litle resourcefulness, you can set up fully functional shelves for under $50 by using donated lumber, community book donations, and free Quran programs. See our How-To page for full details.
If it's your property, you generally don't need permission. However, if you live in a neighborhood with an HOA (Homeowners Association), check their guidelines to make sure a small front-yard library is allowed. If it isn't explicitly covered, you can submit an Architectural Review Request (sometimes called an ACC request) to get formal approval before installing.
Currently, Crescent Shelf is a volunteer-run grassroots initiative. We don't provide direct financial grants at the moment.
This is a valid and important concern. Here are practical steps to balance visibility with security:
Most hosts check their shelf 1โ2 times per week. This takes about 5 minutes โ restocking, removing books that got wet or damaged, and tidying up. In high-traffic areas (near a masjid or school), you may need to check more frequently. In quieter neighborhoods, once a week is usually sufficient.
Remove and recycle them. A community shelf represents our faith โ books with torn covers, water damage, or missing pages reflect poorly on the effort. Gently used is the standard. If you find damaged donations, thank the person for their intention and simply don't put the books out.
